High Cup Nick Fell Race, 23 Feb By Kate Mansell. Shorts and vests were the order of the day at the High Cup Nick Fell Race on Saturday. In warm February conditions, a competitive field set off from the scenic village of Dufton in the North Pennines to complete the 9.4 mile fell race (450m ascent).

I've wanted to see High Cup Nick since seeing it on here and finally had the chance to go. We did an 11 mile loop from Dufton up to High Cup, over Dufton Fell and back down the old quarry road to the base of Dufton pike and back into the village. And a great bonus of seeing the wild Fell ponies on our walk. Fantastic that you were able to see.

A deep chasm on the Pennine fellside, this famous nick, a dramatic geological formation at the top of High Cup Gill is part of the well-known Whin Sill, and overlooks the best glaciated valley in Northern.

The High Cup Nick Fell Race in 2024 took place on 24th February. The Race is organised by Morgan Donnelly in conjunction with the Village Hall. The Hall acts as a base and check-in. Post-race refreshments are provided by the Village Community and a number of villagers act as marshals and help manage the car-parking. Around 500 runners usually.

The event is already full with 250 participants. The race features steep and rough terrain, ridge running, and an interesting final descent.
